Keeping your littles close

Sometimes I feel like I don’t have meaningful connections with my children during the week. The morning rush flows into a busy day at the office which turns into a jam-packed evening with dinner, clean up, books, and bedtime routines. Brief connections are found before bus or daycare drop off through a hug, kiss, daily affirmations, and a smile.

While at work, there are little ways I keep my babies at the forefront throughout my busy day. They smile at me from behind desktop icons. Voice memos of their giggles, babble, and “I love you mom!” are nearby when I need a smile. Frames with snapshot memories from playground visits and family photo sessions clutter my desk.

One of my most precious ways I keep them close, in and out of the office, is through a gold necklace I wear everyday. I custom designed a triangle pendant that hangs on a short chain. Each equilateral leg of the triangle represents one child. The pendant is loose on the chain, which has dual purpose - it gives my fidgety fingers something to do and it rotates so no child is ever always on the top or bottom. What can I say? No one can claim favoritism! The smooth back is stamped with E, L, and O.

I had local jeweler, David Lee, handcraft my pendant. He helped design and create a one-of-a-kind mother’s ring for my mom, so it seemed fitting he too crafted my mother’s pendant. I am grateful for his talent.

So mamas and papas out there, tell me how you keep your littles close and present in your busy lives. What fun or creative ways have you found to bring the smiles, laughter, and memories to you when you might feel far from them?
